Why I Don’t Accept Health Insurance

ree

At Precision Holistic Health, I believe you deserve the freedom to make choices that align with your physical, emotional, and financial wellbeing. Whether you choose traditional health insurance, a cost-sharing program, or a different model that suits your lifestyle, I respect that decision entirely.

That said, you may be wondering why I don’t bill through health insurance—even though most people carry a policy. It’s a good question, and one I always welcome.

There are several reasons I don't take health insurance. The primary reason has to do with the nature of my practice. I work with people who often bring deeply personal, sensitive material to an appointment, because Naturopathy addresses body, mind, and spiritual health. These concerns that go far beyond the surface, involving areas like trauma, chronic illness, lifestyle, and emotional healing.

What many people don’t realize is that when you use health insurance—even for holistic health care—your insurance provider can gain access to your private health records. This is especially true in cases where mental health or behavioral wellness intersects with physical care.

In most insurance contracts, there’s a clause—rarely discussed—that allows the company to “inspect” your provider’s files. While HIPAA is often thought to protect patient privacy, it doesn’t prevent insurance companies from requesting records in the name of authorization or review.

Before the 1990s, this was rare. But with the rise of managed care (or, as many practitioners call it, "mangled care"), insurance providers began requiring more frequent access to client records. In many cases, they require a practitioner to speak with a case manager every 4 to 10 sessions to justify continued care.

Many of my clients also work in environments where even the fact that they are receiving natural care could carry unintended consequences—government agencies, military branches, professional licensing boards, or insurance underwriters may gain access to your health records if you’ve used insurance. That access may include your session dates and treatment notes. I choose to protect your privacy to the highest degree possible. Not accepting insurance allows me to do that.

Why I Chose to Be an Insurance-Free Provider

My decision is not just about privacy—it's also about the quality and integrity of care. Insurance companies often force providers to follow rigid protocols that don’t reflect the unique needs of each person. In a traditional model, they act as a third party that inserts itself between you and your wellness provider—restricting what tests or treatments are allowed, limiting appointment time, and denying necessary services if they don’t fit within pre-set guidelines.

Even worse, they often favor quick fixes over root-cause solutions.

But holistic and epigenetic care doesn’t work that way. My approach involves time, presence, and customization. Whether we’re discussing stress, hormones, trauma, environmental toxins, or genetics—there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. And there's no insurance code that captures the nuance of this kind of work.

The Benefits of an Insurance-Free Practice

Not accepting insurance allows me to offer you:

  • Ample appointment time to explore root issues, not just symptoms

  • Timely scheduling, often with no long waits

  • Direct access to functional and epigenetic testing

  • Transparent pricing with no surprise bills or back-and-forth authorizations

I want you to know upfront what you’re paying for, and to find true value in the care you receive. This allows you to compare options and make empowered decisions about your health—without interference.

Freedom and Confidentiality in Holistic Health

Ultimately, this is about freedom—your freedom to choose your provider, your wellness plan, and your level of confidentiality.

Traditional insurance may be helpful for hospitalization or acute emergencies, but when it comes to outpatient holistic care, it tends to create more obstacles than support. I’ve watched clients become frustrated, overwhelmed, or disillusioned by the limitations insurance companies impose—and I don’t believe you should have to navigate those roadblocks when you’re seeking healing.

By choosing not to contract with insurance providers, I ensure that your health information stays between you and me, your appointment time is fully yours, and your care is guided by your needs—not an insurance algorithm.

If you're ready to reclaim your healthcare rights, preserve your privacy, and engage in deeper, more meaningful healing, I’d be honored to work with you—on your terms.

Strategies to Afford Natural Health Care Without Insurance

🩺 1. Many services cost less without insurance.

Insurance often drives up prices due to administrative overhead, billing departments, and inflated "negotiated" rates. A test that might cost $800 through insurance can sometimes cost $150 when paid directly.

For example:

  • An office visit through insurance: $100-$300 (plus copay)

  • Direct-pay functional medicine visit: $65 (no hidden fees)

💳 2. Use Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).

If you have an HSA or FSA, you can often use those pre-tax dollars to pay for services at a cash-based practice—even if the provider is out-of-network.

📊 3. Know your deductible and out-of-pocket max.

Many people don’t hit their deductible anyway, so they end up paying out of pocket for most care and a monthly premium. In those cases, cash-based care can actually be cheaper, more transparent, and higher quality.

💡 4. Choose care strategically.

People often use:

  • Insurance for emergencies/hospitalizations

  • Cash-based providers for proactive, holistic, or personalized care

This hybrid approach gives them the best of both worlds—insurance for what it’s best at, and individualized care when it matters most.

🕊️ 5. Value-based spending

Some people shift spending priorities to invest in their health, especially if they're dealing with chronic issues that haven’t been helped by conventional, insurance-based care. Holistic and functional care can sometimes reduce future costs by preventing or resolving deeper root causes.

🧾 6. Participate in my Community Health Contribution Program

At Precision Holistic Health, I believe everyone deserves access to personalized, compassionate care—regardless of financial circumstance. That’s why I offer a Community Health Contribution Program, where individuals can either donate funds to support someone in need of care or add their name to a confidential list to receive the gift of healthcare when support becomes available. This initiative allows us to come together as a community—lifting one another up and ensuring that holistic, naturopathic, and epigenetic care is within reach for all. Whether you're in a position to give or in need of support, you're welcome here.
